Planned Giving
1870 Society
The 1870 Society was created in appreciation and celebration of the many alumni and friends of The University of Akron who have remembered the University through a bequest in a will or trust, beneficiary designation on a retirement plan or life insurance policy, life income arrangements, or other planned gifts.

Donor Advised Fund

A donor advised fund (or DAF) is a great tool that functions like a charitable checking and savings account, providing flexibility to recommend how much and how often gifts are made to The University of Akron Foundation and other charities. You can recommend gifts to charity during your lifetime to make an immediate impact, or use the fund as a future planning and family philanthropy tool.

Flowchart: Donor transfers stock or cash to a donor advised fund and the donor advised fund makes charitable distributions.

You enjoy several benefits with your donor advised fund

  • Establish a flexible vehicle for annual charitable giving
  • Benefit from a more tax and cost efficient alternative to a private foundation
  • Obtain a charitable income tax deduction in the year of your gift

How a donor advised fund works

  1. Establish your donor advised fund with a gift of cash, appreciated stocks, bonds, or other eligible marketable assets and receive an immediate charitable income tax deduction.
  2. The assets in the fund grow tax-free. Funds that are part of The University of Akron Foundation Donor Advised Fund Program are held and administered through Akron Community Foundation, which gives you access to a team of professionals who understand the dynamic opportunities DAFs have to offer.
  3. Recommend grants to The University of Akron Foundation and other desired charities based on your timelines and passions. The DAF administrator will make the grant payment, manage tax reporting, and provide you with the necessary documentation for your gift.

You can also create a lasting legacy at UA by naming The University of Akron Foundation as a beneficiary of your DAF after your passing. Contact your fund administrator for a beneficiary form.
